How the Tile Calculator Calculation Works

The tile calculator determines the number of tiles needed by dividing the total area by individual tile area, then adding appropriate wastage.

Formula:

Tiles Needed = (Total Area ÷ Tile Area) × Wastage Factor

We include 10% wastage for tiles to account for cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. Complex patterns may require 15-20% wastage.

Example Calculation

Real-World Scenario:

Tiling a bathroom floor that is 8 feet by 6 feet using 12" × 12" tiles.

1Calculate room area: 8 ft × 6 ft = 48 sq ft
2Calculate tile area: 12" × 12" = 1 sq ft per tile
3Calculate basic requirement: 48 ÷ 1 = 48 tiles
4Add 10% wastage: 48 × 1.10 = 53 tiles
Result: 53 tiles needed (including 10% wastage)
