How the Steel Calculator Calculation Works
Steel reinforcement calculation is based on structural requirements, spacing, and lap lengths according to building codes.
Formula:
Steel Weight = (Bar Length × Cross-sectional Area × Steel Density) + Lap Allowance
Standard steel density is 7850 kg/m³. Lap lengths are typically 40-50 times bar diameter. Includes 2% wastage for cutting.
Example Calculation
Real-World Scenario:
Calculating steel reinforcement for a concrete slab 10m × 8m × 0.15m thick using 12mm bars at 200mm spacing.
1Main bars (10m direction): 8m ÷ 0.2m = 40 bars × 10m = 400m
2Distribution bars (8m direction): 10m ÷ 0.2m = 50 bars × 8m = 400m
3Total length: 400m + 400m = 800m
4Add laps and wastage: 800m × 1.15 = 920m
5Weight: 920m × 0.888 kg/m = 817 kg
Result: 817 kg of 12mm steel bars needed
