How the Brick Calculator Calculation Works

Our brick calculator uses the standard industry method of calculating wall area and dividing by individual brick coverage including mortar joints.

Formula:

Bricks Needed = (Wall Area ÷ Brick Area with Mortar) × Wastage Factor

The calculation accounts for standard mortar joint thickness (10mm) and includes a 5% wastage allowance for breakage and cuts.

Example Calculation

Real-World Scenario:

Building a wall that is 10 feet long and 8 feet high using standard bricks (8" × 4") with 10mm mortar joints.

1Calculate wall area: 10 ft × 8 ft = 80 sq ft
2Calculate brick area with mortar: (8.4" × 4.4") ÷ 144 = 0.257 sq ft
3Calculate basic requirement: 80 ÷ 0.257 = 311 bricks
4Add 5% wastage: 311 × 1.05 = 327 bricks
Result: 327 bricks needed (including 5% wastage)
