How the Paint Calculator Calculation Works

Paint coverage is calculated based on surface area minus doors and windows, divided by paint coverage rate per gallon.

Formula:

Paint Needed = (Total Surface Area - Doors/Windows) ÷ Coverage per Gallon

Most quality paints cover 350-400 sq ft per gallon. We use 350 sq ft for conservative estimates and account for surface texture.

Example Calculation

Real-World Scenario:

Painting a room that is 12 ft × 10 ft with 9 ft ceilings, with one door and two windows.

1Calculate wall area: 2×(12+10) × 9 = 396 sq ft
2Subtract door (20 sq ft) and windows (2×15 = 30 sq ft): 396 - 50 = 346 sq ft
3Add ceiling if painting: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft
4Total area: 346 + 120 = 466 sq ft
5Paint needed: 466 ÷ 350 = 1.33 gallons
Result: 1.5 gallons needed (rounded up)
